PhD Position in Forensic Toxicology
As a university institute, the Institute of Forensic Medicine (IRM) provides forensic medical services for the city and canton of Bern as well as for other catchment areas in addition to teaching and research.
The Department of Forensic Toxicology and Chemistry (FTC) carries out forensic chemical analyses of narcotics, pharmaceuticals, poisons and forensic toxicological analyses of body fluids and other human materials. We are looking for a PhD candidate to conduct research in the Fond für Verkehrssicherheit FVS funded project "Erkennung von Cannabis-beeinträchtigtem Fahrverhalten im Fahrzeug durch maschinelles Lernen" (grant no.22.25.01) from
October 1, 2025 or later.
Tasks/Aims- Assistance for Clinical study "Cannabis-impairment and driving" (organisation, realisation, on-site assistance during study days which are in Jan 2026 to July 2026).
- Development/ optimisation of the analytical methods by LC-MS/MS for cannabinoids in biological matrices (capillary blood, oral fluid, breath samples)
- Collection of biological samples during study and subsequent analysis by LC-MS/MS
- Development of the analysis of alcohol markers, drugs of abuse and broad general-unknown Screening with HR-LC-HR-MS/MS for forensic toxicological investigations
- Writing of scientific publications
- Dissertation at a graduate school at the University of Bern (e.g. GCB), which might require additional ECTS credits.
- Completed Master’s degree in bio/chemistry, pharmacy or similar , preferably with experience in analytical chemistry, LC-MS application, mass spectrometry.
- Language skills: German, English, French (optional)
- Fahrerlaubnis B (driving license category B) would be good
- The opportunity to write your scientific dissertation (duration: approx. 3 years) and develop your own scientific profile - in collaboration with various national and international co-operation partners, including publication activities and conference participation
