Assistant/associate Professor of AI-assisted Biophysics at the Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and Group Leader at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI)

The School of Basic Sciences (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) at EPFL and the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) jointly seek to appoint a Tenure Track Assistant or tenured Associate Professor in AI-Assisted Biophysics at EPFL and as Group Leader at PSI.

EPFL, with its main campus located in Lausanne, Switzerland, on the shores of Lake Geneva, is a dynamically growing and well-funded institution fostering excellence and diversity. It has a highly international campus with world-class infrastructure, including high performance computing.

The EPFL environment is multi-lingual and multi-cultural. EPFL covers a wide spectrum of science and engineering and offers a fertile environment for research and cooperation between different disciplines. Research and teaching within its School of Basic Sciences include theoretical and experimental biophysics, biological imaging and physics of machine learning.

The AI Center, the Dubochet Center for Imaging, the Center for Biomedical Imaging and the Interdisciplinary Center for Electron Microscopy are further examples of interdisciplinary initiatives at EPFL related to the present search.

PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering Sciences in Switzerland specializing in the development and management of large-scale, accelerator- driven research facilities that require a high level of expertise and extensive experience.
Just as EPFL, it belongs to the federal ETH domain and is located in Villigen, between Zürich and Basel. PSI researchers have leading expertise in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature.

By performing fundamental and applied research, they work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy.

Description

The research activities of the prospective candidate are expected to focus on leveraging emerging AI-driven approaches to uncover the physical principles underlying living systems. Areas of interest include AI-enhanced instrumentation, large-scale data analysis powered by AI, and the design of AI-engineered biological systems, as well as multiscale bioimaging and the analysis of protein structure and dynamics.
These efforts should ideally span both fundamental and applied research, with potential applications in health-related areas such as, e.g., neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, or other age-associated conditions.

Requirements

Candidates must have a PhD degree in physics, interdisciplinary life sciences, or related disciplines, an outstanding academic record, a compelling vision, demonstrated impact, and a strong commitment to excellence in teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels and mentoring students.

Contact and Address

Applications including a motivation letter, a curriculum vitae with a list of research outputs, a statement of research (max. 3 pages) and teaching interests (max. 1 page), as well as the contact information of three to five (for the rank of Tenure Track Assistant Professor) or five to seven (for the rank of Associate Professor) references who are ready to supply a letter upon request.
