Research Assistant Zebrafish High-Throughput Drug Screening for Glaucoma 40%
Universität Bern Bern
Department of Immunology, Inselspital, DBMR
Supervisor: Dr. Federica Maria ConederaProject Overview:
This interdisciplinary research project focuses on developing a high-throughput in vivo drug screening platform for glaucoma using zebrafish larvae. Our approach combines visual behavior assays with advanced machine learning for data analysis to identify novel therapeutic compounds.
The project environment is collaborative and methodologically diverse, aiming for innovation in research.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain and prepare zebrafish larvae for high-throughput experimental workflows
- Conduct and analyze visual acuity tests using automated behavioral platforms such as DanioVision
- Prepare, handle, and track drug compound libraries for in vivo screening assays
- Manage molecular and cellular assays, including PCR, qPCR, and Western blot analysis, as needed to validate hits
- Apply statistical and bioinformatics tools (e.g., R, Python) for data analysis and interpretation of behavioral and phenotypic readouts
- Document experimental procedures, contribute to scientific reporting, and support manuscript preparation
- Collaborate effectively within a multicultural, multidisciplinary team and contribute to the supervision and training of junior team members
Desired Profile:
- Ongoing master's degree (or completion) in Molecular Life Sciences, Immunology, Biotechnology, or related field
- Strong background in molecular biology techniques (PCR, qPCR, DNA/RNA extraction, Western blot, flow cytometry)
- Demonstrated skills in gene editing, such as CRISPR/Cas9 or related genome engineering tools
- Hands-on proficiency in laboratory project management and documentation
- Familiarity with animal handling or small vertebrate in vivo models is a plus, but strong willingness to learn is equally valued
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with a record of successful interdisciplinary collaboration
- Motivation to apply bioanalytical methods for translational vision research
- As part of our commitment to international scientific exchange, the laboratory is preparing a competitive application for upcoming Swiss Leading House South Asia funding, specifically aiming to establish a collaborative glaucoma research platform with Sri Lankan academic partners. Candidates with a Sri Lankan background are particularly encouraged to apply, as their expertise and cross-cultural fluency will play a pivotal role in shaping and leading this new era of Swiss–Sri Lankan scientific exchange.
We Offer:
- Stimulating scientific environment within a leading Swiss biomedical research institution
- Training in zebrafish vision assays, drug screening, and machine learning techniques for phenotype analysis
- Opportunities for scientific development, including manuscript preparation and conference participation
- Flexible work schedule (40%) suitable for continuing studies
