Position 1 - Body-to-Brain Mechanisms The Body-to-Brain Mechanisms position focuses on investigating how physical exercise influences pain perception through molecular pathways that connect the body to the brain. This research examines how exercise-derived factors, particularly myokines released during physical activity, interact with neural circuits involved in pain processing in the mouse.The position requires expertise in analyzing how these exercise-induced factors travel through the bloodstream to modulate brain activity and neuroplasticity in regions responsible for pain perception. This work aims to uncover the fundamental biological mechanisms that explain why exercise can reduce pain sensitivity and potentially lead to new therapeutic approaches for pain management.
The research will contribute to our understanding of how lifestyle interventions like physical activity can modify neurobiological processes to improve pain outcomes across various chronic pain conditions.
Position 2 - Brain-to-Body Mechanisms The Brain-to-Body Mechanisms position investigates the descending neural pathways through which the brain regulates pain signals and how these pathways are influenced by physical exercise. This research examines how specific brain circuits in the mouse modulate pain processing at the spinal cord level and how these circuits adapt or change in response to regular physical activity.The position involves studying the functional connectivity between key brain regions that form pain regulation networks and how exercise strengthens or alters these connections. This work aims to identify critical neural circuits that could be targeted to enhance pain relief, particularly for individuals who cannot engage in regular exercise.
The research will advance our understanding of how the central nervous system actively controls pain perception and how this control can be enhanced through physical activity-based interventions.
Your Profile
We seek motivated candidates with an MSc in Neuroscience, Biology, Biomedical Sciences, or related fields, and a strong interest in neurobiology, pain research, and brain-body interactions. Experience with mouse models, in vivo calcium imaging or ex vivo electrophysiology, stereotaxic surgery, viral vectors, opto/chemogenetics, molecular biology, and advanced microscopy is highly desirable.
Proficiency in Python and/or MATLAB and familiarity with Git version control systems are also expected.
