Laboratory Engineer / Technician

Mission

TheKippenberg Laboratoryat EPFL is inviting applications for aMeasurement and Laboratory Engineer/ Technicianposition. This role is ideally suited for arecent Master’s graduate eager to immerse in experimental research in photonics and quantum science.

This is a hands-on position within theLaboratory of Photonics and Quantum Measurements (LPQM), offering on-the-job training and the opportunity to work closely with world-class researchers in experimental quantum optics, integrated photonics, and cryogenic systems.

You will play a key role in supporting and advancing the lab’s research infrastructure and experimental capabilities as well as in performing routine measurements.

Main duties and responsibilities

Laboratory work (80%):

  • Optical Characterization of PICs: Engage in measurements of photonic integrated circuits and verify performance and wafer scale yield. Maintain and improve the performance of the setups
  • Fiber-Optic System optimisation: Maintain and upgrade high-precision fiber-optical setups used in photonics and quantum measurements, including mechanical, optical, and software elements
  • Sample Testing & Reporting: Perform detailed characterization of fabricated samples and generate clear, structured measurement reports
  • Custom Photonic packaging of PICs: Perform and develop PIC packaging with state of the art instrumentation for packaging (Ficontec)
  • Heterogeneous integration of chips: die to die bonding using the SET tool in CMi
  • Cryogenic Systems: Support the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of dilution refrigerators and other cryogenic equipment

Documentation/ administration (10%):

  • Sample Test Reporting: Perform detailed characterization of fabricated samples and generate clear, structured measurement reports
  • Create users’ manuals for standard laboratory setups
  • Maintain the laboratory inventory and general stocks

Team related tasks (10%):

  • Laboratory Culture: Actively contribute to a well-organized, clean, and collaborative lab environment, helping ensure smooth daily operations
  • Quality Control: Assist in establishing protocols and routines for testing, calibration, and quality assurance of lab instruments and devices
  • Team Support: Collaborate closely with researchers, engineers, and students across multiple projects

Profile

Qualification:

  • Master’s degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
  • Demonstrated interest in experimental research and technical problem-solving
  • Basic knowledge of optical setups, fiber optics, or cryogenic systems is advantageous. Passion to do hands-on work
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to document work thoroughly and communicate effectively

Interpersonal skills:

  • Ability to work semi-independently, with a high level of responsibility
  • Proactive attitude and team-oriented mindset
  • Willingness to work in a multi-national team

Computer/software skills:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Familiarity with CAD software packages considered a plus
  • Excellent programming skills (Python, Matlab, etc.)

Languages:

  • Working proficiency in English and French
