About the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)

The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.

The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional, and bilateral interests.

About the Position

As a member of the Australian Permanent Mission’s Disarmament team, you will advance Australia’s interests in Geneva-based multilateral disarmament and arms control fora.

You will represent Australia in, and provide policy advice, analysis and reporting on, relevant disarmament and arms control meetings, including the Conference on Disarmament and conventional weapons processes.

The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Represent Australia and advocate for Australian positions in multilateral disarmament and arms control meetings.
  • Under limited supervision, draft official statements and strategic messaging to promote Australia’s interests in arms control and disarmament fora.
  • Under limited supervision, provide high quality reporting and analysis on issues affecting Australia’s interests in disarmament and arms control fora.
  • Contribute to developing Australia’s policy on arms control and disarmament issues through specialist advice and recommendations.
  • Anticipate and raise awareness of policy opportunities or problems relating to Australia’s interests in disarmament and arms control fora.
  • Advance and manage relationships with key stakeholders, including from other delegations, relevant secretariats and civil society.
  • Co-ordinate competing requests and demands and manage workflow for immediate work area.
  • Undertake other high priority tasks for the Mission as required.
  • Use resources efficiently and carefully, in line with legislation and departmental policies.
Qualifications/Experience
  • Applicants must hold a current Australian Government security clearance at the NV1 or NV2 level.
  • Strong negotiation, advocacy and representation skills.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills and a good grasp of geostrategic dynamics.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated capacity to develop, extend and maintain networks of relevant contacts.
  • An ability to work both independently and as a member of a small team and demonstrate a high level of adaptability and flexibility.
  • Sound judgement, initiative and strong organisational skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Australian Government policies and processes, and/or experience in disarmament, multilateral policy or international security would be an advantage.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent relevant work experience.
Security Requirements
  • This is a security-designated position requiring an Australian security clearance at the NV1 level or higher. Applicants must be Australian citizens and can be dual citizens with the following countries only: New Zealand, the United States of America, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
  • Please note that candidates who hold Swiss citizenship or dual citizenship with one of the above nationalities are not eligible for an Australian Security Clearance.

 A.  Demonstrated knowledge of Australian Government policies and processes. Experience in disarmament, multilateral policy or international security would be an advantage.
 B.  Demonstrated analytical skills and a good grasp of geostrategic dynamics.
 C.  Sound judgment and initiative and a demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
 D.  Strong negotiation, advocacy and representational skills.

 E.  Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to develop, extend and maintain a network of relevant contacts.
