Are you ready to dive into the world of genomics and data science? At SOPHiA GENETICS, we’re offering an exciting opportunity for a Algorithm Developer Intern to join our team and help explore how gene conversion events and copy number variations (CNVs) can be detected in complex pseudogenic regions using Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS).

Over 30% of staff at SOPHiA GENETICs hold PhDs. You will be joining a small team of experts specializing in the research and development of cutting-edge software solutions for analyzing copy number variation (CNV) data derived from next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies.

CNVs affect susceptibility to cancer by regulating gene expression and play a crucial role in tumor suppressor genes. Over the years, the CNV team has released leading algorithms for CNV detection, gene conversion and star allele analysis. By joining us, you'll have the opportunity to contribute to the research and development of state-of-the-art tools at the cutting edge of the field, with impact on research and clinical applications worldwide.

You will be involved in:

  • NGS data exploration to gain initial insights, for example through testing the analytical performance of a pre-existing WGS algorithm.
  • Technical analysis, e.g. through statistical models, to evaluate how analytical performance may be improved.
  • Evaluation of the technical feasibility, e.g. by developing prototype algorithms, of such improvements.
  • Critical evaluation and management of the day-to-day running of the project.
  • Presentation of results to members of the team/department/senior management.
Requirements
  • PhD or Masters degree in a quantitative discipline (Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, Computational Biology, Data Science)
  • Excellent analytical and algorithmic skills.
  • Excellent understanding of statistical methods.
  • Some understanding/experience in manipulating NGS data (bam file or coverage) would be a plus.
  • Proficient in Python. Proficiency in another language (e.g. R) would be a plus.
  • Fluent English (spoken and written).
  • Independence and experience in driving research projects.
  • Good team-work and collaboration skills.
  • Good communication and presentation skills.

Benefits

What will you learn:

  • How to work with real-world NGS data, including BAM files and coverage analysis.
  • Data exploration, statistical modeling, and visualization techniques.
  • How to contribute to scientific innovation in a matrix organization.
  • Best practices for communicating complex results to technical and non-technical audiences.
